Ranchi, Jan 03, 2009: Jharkhand's crime investigation department has taken over the case involving the recent extortion threats to Team India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Earlier this week, Dhoni had received two letters from a man, called Taslim, who claimed himself to be a sharpshooter working for underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Dhoni was told to pay Rs 50 lakh or face dire consequences. On Wednesday, Dhoni handed over the two letters to Ranchi SSP Sampat Meena.

Police said the decision to hand over the case to the CID was taken because of threats to the cricketer's family living in Ranchi. ‘‘Also, the government doesn't want to take any chance because the sender of the letter is one of the most wanted criminals was operating in Ranchi till about a decade ago,'' sources said.

Jharkhand home secretary J B Tubid said, ‘‘The police department will take the investigation to its logical conclusion.”
