Taufel meets Lorgat, reports on Lahore attack
Melbourne, Mar 10:Umpire Simon Taufel presented a report to International Cricket Council CEO Haroon Lorgat on the recent attacks on Sri Lankan players in Lahore and sought a clarification from the ICC official who had urged umpires "to be more rational" in the wake of the March 3 strike.
Chris Broad, who was the Match Referee for the Lahore Test, minced no words in his criticism of the inadequate security cover in Pakistan, a view echoed by both Taufel and fellow umpire Steve Davis who were lucky to escape the attack.
Lorgat subsequently urged the match officials to be "more rational" in their view, prompting Taufel to seek a meeting in Sydney yesterday to clear the air.
"Haroon and I talked about the experience of Lahore, but more particularly we talked about the broader picture and what the ICC could do to deal with the issues involved," Taufel was quoted as saying by 'The Australian'.
"It's got implications for how the ICC operates in future," said the Australian who believes the attack is symptomatic of how the game is managed today.
"We need to look at the lessons outside of that incident because what happened in Lahore is a symptom of how cricket is managed and operated.
"The whole issue of how cricket is run needs to be looked at by the (ICC) board and the chief executives (of the 10 so-called Test playing countries)," Taufel said. PTI
