US to assist Pakistan, India in war against terror
ISLAMABAD, Dec 16: American Senator Christopher Bond Tuesday said US has offered its assistance to Pakistan and India for evolving best mechanism to ensure cooperation in the war against terrorism. Talking to newsmen here at American Embassy following his meetings with Pakistani leadership including Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, Governor NWFP and other officials, the US Senator Christopher S. Kit Bond said, “We use our office to ensure best cooperation between Pakistan and India for arresting actual perpetrators involved in Mumbai attacks.”
He said during his visit to Pakistan he has been provided fresh reports with identified names of persons involved in the Mumbai attacks.
Former Governor of Missouri and now third time Senator from same state, Bond said he had very useful and productive meetings with Pakistani leaders today.
He said a number of recommendations including Reconstruction Opportunities Zones (ROZs) in the northern areas were discussed during his meeting especially with the NWFP Governor Owais Ghani for social development in the troubled areas of Pakistan.
Senator Bond said, “We believe that along with using force, there is need to support those groups who are against the militants.”
Replying to a question, Senator Bond said the issue of drone attacks in Pakistan was raised during his meetings with Pakistan Army Chief and Pakistan expressed concern on these attacks.
He however said, “We do pursue high value targets and drone attack will continue” adding “however we advise our partner whenever there will be attack”.
Replying to a question about funding to Al‑Qaida and other elements involved in the terrorist activities, other than drug money, the Senator said he could not comment on other resources.”
He said most people believe that drug money is just a portion of the financial assistance available to these militants.
About progress on the war against terror, Senator Bond said President Bush said US has been successful in taking down many of the leaders involved in the terrorism activities.
He said America has remained successful with the help of its friends in preventing any attack like 9/11. (APP)
