SAARC leaders condemn terrorism, call for joint action
Colombo Aug 02: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said terrorism remains the single biggest threat to the region's stability and called for ''joint action'' to fight this scourge with determination to defend ''values of pluralism, peaceful co-existence and the rule of law'' as the 15th SAARC summit began here today amid tight security.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the summit, Dr Singh said''terrorism continues to rear its ugly head in our region. We can not afford to lose the battle against ideologies of hatred, fanaticism and against all those who seek to destroy our social fabric.''
His sentiments were also shared by other SAARC leaders including Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who was critical of Pakistan's involvement in terror attacks in his country.
The Prime Minister said the recent terrorist attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul and the serial bomb explosions in Bangalore and Ahmedabad were ''gruesome reminders of the barbaric'' acts and a determmined effort was needed to fight the scourge.
