Srinagar, Dec 08, 2008: The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway remained open despite snowfall while it was heavily snowing at Razdan and Sadhna top, temporarily disrupting traffic to Gurez and Karnah. The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway also remained open despite rains. A senior BEACON officer Mr Mehta told UNI

it was heavily snowing at Razadan top connecting the border area of Gurez.Similarly, there was also snowing at Sadhna top which connects Karnah, also a border town, he said.

Mr Mehta said since it was snowing, the clearance operation has not started yet. Once the snowfall stops, we will start operation to make the roads again traffic worthy.

He said if there would be heavy snowfall, it may take some more time to clear the roads before traffic is again allowed.

However, the residents of Gurez and Karnah told a UNI journalist recently that both the roads now remain open for most part of the year despite snowfall because of efforts being put in by the BEACON authorities. The BEACON immediately clears the snow though they have suffered some losses, the residents said. (UNI)
