Kishtwar Dec 07: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said, discriminated and deprived over the years, the sub-regions of the State would now get justice in development. "While, for political purposes, a lot is being talked about regional discrimination, the plight of the sub-regions has almost gone unnoticed all these years," he said.
Addressing public meetings in remote Dachin, Wadwan and Marwah areas of Kishtwar constituency today, Sayeed said immediately after taking over as the chief minister in 2002, his Government had devised and started implementing focused developmental strategies for the deprived sub-regions of the State to bring them out of the slumber. "While the foremost priority of the Government at that time was to give a sense of security to the people in these areas, relaxation in the security environment was at the same time supplemented with relief through developmental initiatives as well," he said and added that after suffering decades of deprivation and neglect, the inhabitants of some of the remotest corners of Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kishtwar, Banihal, Ramban and other akin areas in Udhampur and Reasi districts have now started feeling that they are also a part of the same State.
Castigating the National Conference for having just exploited, over the years, the innocence and simplicity of the people in various sub-regions of the State for political gains, Sayeed challenged the NC leadership to claim a single major political or developmental initiative that the party pioneered during its thirty year's rule for the welfare of this forsaken lot of the State's population. "I am sure the NC leaders have nothing to demonstrate on this count," he said and added that it was the PDP-led Coalition Government that, for the first time, gave a sense of belonging and a voice to the people of these ill-fated areas.
Pointing out that PDP has incorporated the agenda of political and economic empowerment of the State's sub-regions in its Self-Rule document as well, Sayeed said the party would ensure that people in these areas get the much-deserved share in development funds and programs. He said creation of new administrative units, better road connectivity with the rest of the State and upgradation of educational and health infrastructure would boost the economic prosperity of the people living in these areas. "Our Government would also ensure that the inhabitants of these areas have primary claim over the jobs and other economic benefits accruing because of the construction of power projects in their vicinity," he said and added that despite being bestowed with the richest water, forest and mineral resources of the State, the people in these areas have not benefited economically from the same.
Sayeed said while the dream of Mughal Road has almost been accomplished now, it would be his foremost priority to provide all-weather connectivity to Kishtwar with the Kashmir valley and for this purpose a tunnel would be constructed on Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag road that was made operational by his government.
PDP candidate for Kishtwar constituency Sayed Asghar Hussain also addressed the meetings.
