Art and Culture crucial for developing stable, harmonious society: Vohra

Governor, Mr N N Vohra, today expressed happiness over the Valley reverting back to normal activities in the field of art and culture, saying that arts and culture are crucial aspects of developing a stable and harmonious society.

Srinagar: Governor, Mr N N Vohra, today expressed happiness over the Valley reverting back to normal activities in the field of art and culture, saying that arts and culture are crucial aspects of developing a stable and harmonious society.
Speaking at the 44th Annual State Art Exhibition here this evening, the Governor complimented the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languagesa for holding such competitions and awarding the budding artists for their talented works.
Mr Vohra urged the Academy to broad-base art exhibitions at primary, middle and higher level educational institutions, observing that this will greatly help in encouraging young artists and sharpening their talent. The artists thus produced could make their mark at the national and international exhibitions, given opportunities and adequate exposure, he maintained.
The Governor also asked the Academy to evolve a mechanism of purchasing the amateur art works like paintings, sculptors etc, which could serve as an incentive to the artists and become assets of great value at a future time. He recalled his association with Kashmir, dating back to 51 years, and referred to the work of Ghulam Rasool Santosh, who later became an internationally known artist.
Mr Vohra complimented the award winners and hoped that those who could not make it this time will emerge winners in the forthcoming exhibitions
In his welcome address, the Secretary of the Academy, Mr Zaffar Iqbal Manhas, said that Jammu and Kashmir had been an abode and centre of excellence in art learning, mention of which is found in Neelmat Puran, the history of Kashmir written in 7th Centurry AD. He referred to the Fresco painting of Jammu, Alchi Gumpa of Ladakh and miniature paintings of Kashmir and said that these are the living testimony to the flourishing traditions of paintings in this part of the world.
Mr Manhas said that the Cultural Academy is endeavouring to maintain pace with the modern and traditions forms of paintings for over five decades by organizing National and State Artist Camps, conferring awards, providing financial assistance for holding one man or group painting exhibitions. He said that the 44th Annual State Art Exhibition had taken place after about 15 years.
The Governor presented awards to Mr Arshad Saleh and Mrs Sonu Aggarwal in the Artist Category and Mr Jasleen Singh and Ms Attiya Thakur in the Student Category. He congratulated them for their achievement.
Commissioner/Secretary Culture, Mr N K Verma presented Certificates of Merit to Amreek Singh Namdari, Mr Javed Iqbal, Mr Suya J S Bali, Mr Rohit Verma, Ms Renu Bhalla, Ms Sunita Kumari and Ms Insha Manzoor.
To mark the occasion, a musical concert was presented by the local artists. Mr Ashraf Tak, presented vote of thanks.
Earlier, the Governor went round the Art Gallery and evinced keen interest in the paintings of the participants and the award winners.
