BSF, Pak Rangers officials meet; discusses cease-fire violation

Lahore: Top Indian and Pakistani border officials on Monday opened crucial talks focusing on recent upsurge in cease-fire violations as well as crimes like smuggling and illegal border crossings.
An 18-member delegation of the Border Security Force, led by Additional Director General U K Bansal, traveled through the Wagah border post for the bi-annual meeting with the Pakistan Rangers in the eastern city of Lahore.
Though the agenda of the talks was on discussing ways to prevent smuggling, drug trafficking and illegal border crossings, the two sides focused mainly on cease-fire on the international border, especially in Pathankot-Jammu sector.
They also discussed enhancing border fencing as a means to stop illegal crossings.
For the past number of months Pakistani Rangers have violated the cease-fire a number of times in this sector apparently to give covering fire to intruding militants.
Pakistani officials have said they will also take up alleged instances of unprovoked firing by the BSF and the issue of Pakistani prisoners detained in Indian jails.
Bansal told reporters that the aim of the talks was not to indulge in a "blame game but to do the utmost to stop crimes like smuggling".
The Pakistani side at the four-day talks will be led by Maj Gen Muhammad Yaqub Khan of the Pakistan Rangers. Meetings between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers are held every six months according to an agreed programme.
