Jammu Oct 09: The delayed Baglihar Power Project in Jammu and Kashmir, hanging fire for the last 16 years for various reasons including objections by Pakistan, is all set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday.
"The hydropower project has been completed and it's ready to produce electricity. It will be commissioned by the Prime Minister tomorrow. It's like a dream come true for the state," Sandeep Naik, secretary, state power department, told PTI from Chanderkote-located Baglihar project.
This is third power project commissioned in J&K on river Chenab and second by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh this year. The PM had commissioned 360-MW Dulhasti project in Kishtwar on April 26, 2008.
Conceived by the state power department in 1992, tenders for the project were first floated in 1996. But due to bureaucratic hurdles, fresh tenders were floated and contract of the construction was given to Jai Prakash Industries in 1999.
"The company started work on the project in 1999," Naik said adding it took nine-and-a-half years to complete. The commissioning of the mega project is set to give a boost to the ailing power sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
The project cost originally fixed at Rs 4,000 crore had already crossed Rs 5,000 crore as estimates were revised, he said.
