Rajouri September 21: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for timely completion of the Mughal Road to provide much-needed relief to a vast population in Poonch-Rajouri area by way of better connectivity with the Kashmir valley.
"I hope the Government would keep its latest commitment of making the Mughal Road jeepable by Eid," senior PDP leader Tariq Hameed Karra said while addressing a day-long convention of the party workers here today.
Karra said the recent appalling "economic blockade" enforced against Kashmir valley, Poonch, Rajouri and Doda districts by the Sangh Parivar-sponsored communal elements in Jammu has only reinforced the urgency of making the Mughal Road operational at the earliest. "I have reports that some prejudiced officer in the Forest Department is making last ditch efforts to hamper the work on the road," he said and asked the Government to identify and initiate disciplinary action against the said officer who is trying to act out of turn.
Karra said the people of the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri, who were always exploited by various political parties as a lucrative vote-bank, got the tasted of tangible development only during the first three years of the PDP-led Coalition Government. "Whether it is setting up of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, focused development of Shahadra Sharief Shrine or construction of Mughal road, all these projects were piloted under the leadership of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed," he said and added that the Mughal Road would have been since completed, but the lack of interest in the project after the change of guard in 2005 resulted in its inordinate delay.
Karra said the PDP has made the people of Poonch-Rajouri areas conscious of their rights and nobody can now take them for a ride and exploit them for electoral purposes. He said the people in these areas would be now equal stakeholders and shareholders in the development funds which were denied to them over the years.
Karra said unlike the traditional political class, who keep on changing their ideologies and stances to suit their interests, PDP leadership pursued its Kashmir-resolution agenda with great degree of consistency and wisdom and never allowed dilution of its agenda even while in power. "The then Chief Minister and the PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed even moved a resolution in the State Legislature emphasizing how the Indo-Pak dialogue and reconciliation process was vital for the peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue," he said and added that the PDP leadership has been unequivocally speaking about the inevitability of resolving the Kashmir issue peacefully at various forums, both within and outside the State.
Senior PDP leaders Abdul Rehman Veeri, Master Tassaduq Hussain, Mohammad Sharief Tariq, Chowdhary Zulfikar and Mohammad Shafi Dar also addressed the convention.
