Protests against killings rock north Kashmir, Indefinite curfew continues in Baramulla, Shopian
Baramulla, Sept 13: With indefinite curfew continued in Baramulla following the killing of youth from Kupwara and injures to scores of people including three cops on Friday, brief clashes between police and paramilitary troopers continued on Saturday on RTC bridge in North Kashmir's Baramulla district.
Meanwhile complete shutdown and protests by students were held in Hundwara and Kupwara district.
Eyewitness said that hundreds of youth defied curfew imposed in Baramulla to stage protest demonstrations against the killings and strong force used by police and CRPF to quill the peaceful protestors on Friday.
Shouting pro-freedom and pro-Islam slogans, the protesting youth took out a procession from old town Baramulla on Saturday. The protesters were intercepted by Police and CRPF personnel who used batons to disperse them, triggering intense clashes as the agitators indulged in stone pelting, witness's sources said.
Official sources said So far, there was no report of any injury in the clashes. The situation was put under control after the intervention of police.
In Hundwara, hundreds of students yelling pro-freedom and pro-Islam took out a rally from Degree College and Higher Secondary Hundwara to protest against the use of "force" during peaceful protests on Friday in which two persons were killed and more than 130 including JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik was injured in police action.
Eyewitness said that shops and business establishments opened as usual in the morning but after protests who forced the shopkeepers close the shops and spontaneous strike was observed.
In Kupwara, complete shutdown was observed with traffic off from roads and all government and private intuitions remained closed.
An spokesman of the police department said here this evening that the situation in the valley remained by and large peaceful today barring stone pelting incidents at Maisuma and Hari Singh High Street in Srinagar.
The spokesman said that curfew in Baramulla and Shopian towns continue today also.
