Strike by govt employees keeps life disrupted
Srinagar June 13: Life in major towns of the valley continued to be disrupted for the fifth consecutive day as state government employees went on a day's strike in support of their demands on Friday just a day after transporters withdrew their strike following a hike of 14 per cent in passenger fares.
Work in government offices and educational institutions in Srinagar and in other major towns came to a standstill in response to a strike call given by the Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) in protest against what it called "government's delaying tactics vis-à-vis employees' demands" and police action on "peaceful protestors".
Over 150 employees had been detained by police when they tried to stage a protest outside civil secretariat on June 9, 10 and 12 in support of their demands which include regularisation of daily wagers and adhoc employees, enhancement of retirement age to 60 years and withdrawal of recent hike in prices of petroleum products.
Meanwhile, a delegation of united forum, an amalgam of different organisations, on Friday called on the minister for consumer affairs and public distribution Taj Mohiuddin and urged him to withdraw the hike in passenger fares as well as prices of petroleum products and LPG in the state.
