- Srinagar June 11: Hurriyat (M) leader and a close aide of Mirwaiz dynasty Mr Yaqub Vakil today joined Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, party president Ms Mehbooba Mufti, party senior vice president Moulana Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, party senior leader and minister for finance Tariq Hamid Kara and party district president Ghulam Qadir Pardesi welcomed the new entrant into the party fold.
Vakil who started his political career in 1964 as an active member of Awami Action Committee (AAC) remained Personal Assistant, Public Relation Officer and Press secretary of late Mirwaiz Molvi Farooq till his assassination. Later he became one of the founder members of Hurriyat Conference. For 15 years he remained secretary to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq till 2005 when he resigned from the Awami action Committee and Hurriyat Conference.
Speaking on the occasion, Vakil said that PDP's pro people policies and the work done by the coalition government under able leadership of PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed motivated him to join his party fold. He added that in future he would serve his party with an aim to contribute to the collective good of people. Stating that unemployment, development and rehabilitation of the youth will be his political agenda. "Our Down Town has always been neglected for the last 60 years. I want to develop Shaher-i-Khas and rehabilitate the youth who are the first and the worst sufferer of the conflict," Vakil observed.
Clarifying that there was no political difference between him and AAC and he resigned from the party on some personal grounds, Vakil remarked that he wanted to contribute some concrete to his people, which motivated him to join the PDP. Vakil who was a member of Hurriyat delegation that visited Pakistan in 2004, said, "We visited Pakistan via Srinagar-Muzaffrabad road and the opening of his road was the contribution of Mr Sayeed. Repeal of POTA, rein in STF terror, troop eviction from government and private buildings, establishment of schools, colleges and universities, hospitals and a big network for roads are some of the highlights of this great statesman's contribution. This changed my mind and I decided to work under his able leadership."
Vakil said that soon after his resignation from Hurriyat Conference, he started analyzing different political parties existing in the state and it was the PDP, which he ranked highest on his scale. "This party has great disciplined leaders in its fold who work under the able guidance of our great statesman Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and take leaps under the directions of party president Ms Mehbooba Mufti who is a political visionary, dedicated and committed politician," Vakil averred. He added that unlike other political parties, PDP does not believe in double speak and implements its agenda in letter and spirit.
Welcoming him in the party, Mr Sayeed, Ms Mufti and Moulana Ansari described Vakil as honest and dedicated politician who always aspired for the public good. "It is our pro-people polices which motivate and attract the political leaders like Vakil sahib to our party fold," Ms Mufti said on the occasion.
