Srinagar May 21: The moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference on Wednesday suggested that India and Pakistan should hold talks to resolve the Kashmir issue in Jammu and Kashmir itself making people's representatives from the state a part of the dialogue process.
Hurriyat (moderate) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq made the suggestion while addressing a function here to mark the death anniversaries of two of its slain leaders.
Refusing to accept Kashmir as a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan the Hurriyat (moderate) chairman said it could not be solved without the involvement of the people's representatives from the state in the talks.
"Kashmir is not a bilateral issue ... It can be resolved only by involving the representatives of the people of Jammu and Kashmir," Mirwaiz said in his speech at the Eidgah martyr's graveyard here on the death anniversaries of Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone.
Referring to the talk about countries without borders Mirwaiz asserted it was not possible to achieve this goal in the subcontinent without the resolution of Kashmir issue.
Rejecting speculation about Hurriyat leaders participating in the forthcoming assembly elections in the state, he said, "We are not struggling and striving for power ... elections are not a solution to Kashmir issue."
Mirwaiz also renewed his call to other separatist leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mohammad Yasin Malik and Sajad Gani Lone to come under one roof as "the movement has come to a crucial and decisive phase".
He also advised the mainstream politicians to work with the separatist amalgam if they were serious about resolving the Kashmir issue.
