PDP to take up the proposal to introduce the dual currency in J&K with PM
Jammu April 16: Former chief minister and People's Democratic Party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said he would take up the proposal to introduce the dual currency system in Jammu and Kashmir with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the latter's visit to the state later this month.
"I will put the suggestion before the prime minister for free flow and use of Indian and Pakistani currencies in J&K and PoK in line with the proposal of SAARC and in the pattern of European model," Sayeed said here.
"We suggest that Jammu and Kashmir could be made a model for use of dual currency and it could further boost trade between two sides," he said, adding that people across the border may accept more Indian currency once the system is introduced.
The PDP always supported the resolution of the Kashmir dispute through dialogue. Former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had initiated the process and it was also followed by the present prime minister, he said.
The response from the Pakistan government headed by President Pervez Musharraf was also encouraging and it is expected that the new dispensation in Pakistan would also carry the momentum, he said, adding that resolution of this issue is a historical necessity.
