Mirwaiz and Yaseen under house arrest
Srinagar, July 10, 2009: Chairman of the moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Mohammad Yaseen Malik remained under house arrest in Kashmir. A spokesman of the Hurriyat said Mirwaiz Omar, who chaired Executive Council (EC) meeting of the amalgam yesterday during the day,
was put under house arrest late last night.He said a large number of central paramilitary forces and state police personnel had been deployed outside his Nigeen house and he was not being allowed to move out.
Senior police officers informed Mirwaiz that he cannot move out of his house till further orders, the spokesman said.
Mirwaiz was to offer Friday prayers at historic Jamia masjid, he said adding the Hurriyat had asked people to observe Prisoners Day today and hold peaceful demonstrations after Friday prayers against continued arrest of thousands of political prisoners in different jails in and outside the state.
A JKLF spokesman said that Mr Malik remained under house arrest for the past one and a half month despite his ill health.
He alleged that Malik was not being allowed to move out of his Maisuma house by security forces deployed outside.
