Life remains crippled in Kashmir on third day
Srinagar, July 10, 2009: Life remained crippled here and other major towns in the Kashmir valley for the third day today due to strike. The breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) had called for a strike today in protest against the Kupwara incident where a jawan of Territorial Army (TA) killed a girl yesterday while moderate Hurriyat had asked people to observe prisoners day on Friday to protest against continued arrest of separatists.
The People's Political Party (PPP) Hilal Ahmad War had appealed to people to observe strike till Friday in protest against the death of Asrar Ahmad under mysterious circumstances on July 8, which has evoked massive protest for the past three days.
Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads.
However, some private vehicles could be seen plying on city routes.
People, including women, children and elderly persons, were seen on foot to reach their destinations in the absence of transport facilities.
Work in government offices, banks and semi-government departments remained affected due to strike while educational institutions wore a deserted look as teaching staff and students stayed away in response to strike call.
A UNI report from Baramulla said complete a shutdown was observed in this and other north Kashmir districts with all shops and business establishments closed.
Transport was also off the roads while government offices, banks, schools and colleges remained closed.
A report from Anantnag said shops and business establishments in this and other south Kashmir districts and towns remained closed and vehicular traffic was not seen.
A procession was taken out in the town today in protest against the alleged increase in the Human Rights violations in the Kashmir valley.
The processionists, raising pro-freedom slogans, marched through different streets from Cheni Chowk-Lal Chowk and Janglat mandi.
