Srinagar: June 30: Strongly condemning the latest spate of civilian killings in Baramulla, CPI (M) state secretary and MLA Kulgam M Y Tarigami said such incidents go against the peace building efforts in the state.

Expressing his deep grief and sorrow over use of disproportionate force against the protesters and subsequent civilian killings in Baramulla and the disappearance of a 15-year old boy Basharat Ahmad Bhat in Larkipora Doru, allegedly in army custody, Tarigami said government should immediately rise to the occasion, uncover the truth behind such deplorable incidents, identify the wrongdoers and punish them according to the law of the land. “If any person in uniform indulges in traumatizing the people, should be taken to task, and government should make no compromises on that,” he urged.

“The prevalent situation is ominous for peace and reconciliatory efforts being made at various levels vis-à-vis the Kashmir issue,” Tarigami said adding state government should realize its obligations at this hour and protect life and dignity of people.

“The continuous uncertainty prevailing in the aftermath of ghastly Shopian incident, and the violence and civilian casualties thereafter has cast dark shadows on the state. The government should talk to the people rather than trying to assuage their anger through harsh measures,” Tarigami stressed.

He cautioned the people that the political vultures are trying to prey on the troubles of the people. “Such elements are hell-bent to exploit peoples’ emotions for their petty political interests. People should remain on guard against such unscrupulous elements,” he said.(NAK)
