People join SMC squads in unearthing smuggled polythene

Srinagar, June 25:With the successful drive launched immediately after banning polythene use, thousands of quintals of polythene seized from various parts of the Srinagar city was destroyed by Srinagar Municipal Corporation. Not only vehicles heavily loaded with polythene were seized but big godowns clandestinely dealing with polythene trade
were also sealed. During last 3 days, the Special SMC squads raided shopkeepers in interior city of Srinagar included Rainawari, Jogi Lankar, Saida Kadal, Hazratbal, Tailbal, Nishat, Kak Sarai, Sekidafar, Eidgah, Sazgaripora, Hawal, Alamgari Bazar, Zadibal, Nowshera, Soura, Buchpora, Umarhair, Ahmad Nagar, Pandash, Nagbal etc.
The experts of the department of Health, Agriculture, State Pollution Control Board and Forests have declared polythene hazardous which has not only ill-effected the human being but destroyed the environment as well. The drive started from Srinagar has picked up now in all other parts of the State.
As many as 600 Eco-Friendly Volunteers from all over India are arriving in Srinagar to join anti-polythene campaign and learn from officers and officials of SMC the method adopted by them for successful implementation after banning polythene so that they are also able to implement it in other parts of the country. The volunteers shall join the Dal and Jhelum cleaning drive as well as a mark of good gesture.
The efforts made by SMC, Tourism, SPCB, LAWDA, Tourism and other line departments have received acclaim on national as well as international levels. Appreciations are also being received by SMC from all over the world for the efforts being made by the people of the State particularly by Valleyities who realized that time has come to save their own heavenly environs and also realized that the disastrous element of methane being used in making the polythene severely affects heart, stomach and nerves system.
The Cooperation extended by citizens which include Traders Federations, FCCI, KCCI and other associations joined the campaign too.
Earlier, it was NGOs, Kashmir University, Colleges and other educational institutions and intellectuals who came forward in a big way demanding ban on polythene.
The Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah took Eco-friendly decision on these demands and was the first Chief Minister to ban polythene so that Kashmir environ is saved. This was acknowledged at the Eco-Convocation held on “Earth Day” in the first week of May 2009. On that day, 2 kilometre long procession was taken from Nishat to Kashmir University which has become history in Eco-friendly mission.
