Life remains crippled due to strike on 4th day in Kashmir
Srinagar June 04: Life in the Kashmir Valley remained crippled for the fourth day today due to general strike, extended till tomorrow by the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) in protest against the killing of two women after their alleged rape at Shopian in south Kashmir on May 30.
Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who had given general strike call for one-day on June 1, later extended it till yesterday. However, he extended it for two more days.
Shops and other business establishments remained closed in the civil lines, uptown and other areas in the summer capital, Srinagar, for the fourth day.
Traffic was also off the roads. However, some private vehicles and scooters could be seen on the roads. It was a field day for three wheelers, who were charging extra from the passengers in the absence of any other transport. A UNI correspondent could see people, including women, covering the distance on foot in the absence of transport.
All educational institutions still wore a deserted look as teaching staff and students stayed away while work in government offices, banks and semi-government offices was badly affected due to the strike.
A report from Baramulla said complete shut down was observed in this and some other major towns of north Kashmir with all shops and business establishments closed. However, some private vehicles could be seen on the roads.
