Jammu-Srinagar national highway reopens for one-way traffic
Jammu, Feb 06, 2009: The 300-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway, closed since yesterday due to landslides, has been reopened for traffic heading towards Srinagar after clearance of hurdles at Panthal, about 170-kms from here, police sources said here on Friday.
However, hundreds of vehicles were still stuck on way to Jammu, they said. The vehicular traffic was disrupted in areas around Jawahar tunnel
last evening as heavy rains and snowfall triggered landslides and made the highway too slippery for convenient movement of vehicles.
The Border Roads Organisations (BRO), which maintains the highway, cleared the highway this morning and allowed traffic movement towards Srinagar, they said.
Meanwhile, reports from Ramban district say a 300-metre stretch of Batote-Doda road, at Assar area, has been damaged due to rising waters of Chenab River, resulting in disruption of traffic between Batote and Doda.
Repair work will have to wait till the water recedes, police said.
