Snow, rains lash wide parts of Kashmir
Srinagar, Jan 25, 2009: Upper reaches of Kashmir valley experienced fresh snowfall, while the plains including summer capital Srinagar received incessant rains since last night, official sources said.The high altitude areas of Kashmir valley including the famous Ski resort of Gulmarg and the holy cave shrine of Amarnath received fresh snowfall this morning, the sources said.
The snowfall followed overnight rains across Kashmir valley including Srinagar where normal life was disrupted.Besides Gulmarg and the holy cave shrine of Amarnath, reports of mild snowfall were also received from Baba Reshi, Khilanmarg, Aferwath, Kangdoori, Sadna Pass, Z-Gali, Gurez, Nowgam, Gund, Yousmarg, Sonamarg and Duksum, the sources said. Meanwhile, the night temperature across Kashmir valley has showed an upward trend for the third day. The night temperature recorded by the Meteorological Department at various places of the valley was several degrees above normal during this part of the season, a spokesman of the Meteorological Department said.
He said Srinagar recorded the minimum temperature of 5.6 degrees Celsius - almost eight degrees above normal. Pahalgam, where the normal temperature is minus 10 degrees Celsius during this part of the winter, witnessed a warmer night with a low of 1.6 degrees Celsius, the spokesman added.
He said Kupwara which received the highest of 9.6 mm of rainfall during the past 12 hours upto 830 hrs in the morning experienced minimum temperature of 4.4 degrees Celsius. The night temperature at Kokernag and Qazigund was 4.4 degrees Celsius each, the spokesman said.
