Mirwaiz for practical steps by world community on Kashmir

Srinagar Jan 16: Unless the world community takes practical steps mere statements will not be able to resolve the Kashmir issue, moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq said today even as he welcomed the comments of British foreign secretary David Miliband on the issue.
"We welcome the statement of British Foreign Secretary David Miliband that resolution of the Kashmir dispute was important for peace but want to convey to the world community including Britian and America that unless practical steps are taken mere statements cannot work," Mirwaiz said addressing a Friday Congregation at Jamia Masjid here.
He said peace would elude South Asia till the Kashmir issue is resolved in accordance to the wishes and aspirations of the people.
Mirwaiz said both India and Pakistan instead of talking of war should initiate a meaningful dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues including Kashmir.
"The entire world is unanimous with the opinion of Miliband that resolution of the dispute over Kashmir would end the threat to peace and prosperity in the South Asia region," Mirwaiz said.
Referring to the killing of over 1000 innocent Palestinians in the past two weeks, the Hurriyat chairman condemned the silence of the world community on the genocide in Gaza and called for"solid steps"to end the repression unleashed by Israel in the region.
