ARREST OF PT. J. L. NEHRU
Shiekh Mohammad Abdullah and other leaders were accused for sedition and revolt against the Maharaja. The state of affairs in Kashmir shocked the Indian leaders and the began to mediate to reach an amicable settlement and Pt.J.L.Nehru, in particular, wrote letters to Maharaja and showed his concern about the developments in Kashmir.Finding the response of Maharaja Hari Singh poor,Pt. J. L. Nehru decided to go in person but on reaching Domel, inside the State territory, was stopped and put under arrest.
National leaders were shocked to learn about the detention of Pt.J.L.Nehru,particularly at a time when his services were urgently required in deciding the modalities of the British withdrawal and future set-up of India.Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad wrote to Maharaja Hari Singh asking for postponement of trial of Shiekh Mohammad Abdullah so that Pandit Ji could return to Delhi at this crucial hour when nations fate hung in uncertainty.Maharaja Hari Singh did not agree to postpone the trial but allowed Pt. Nehru to return to Delhi after appearing in the court to defend Shiekh Mohammad Abdullah.
