CABINET MISSION

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
On the national front, things were moving fast and the British were making preparations to transfer power to the Indian people.A delegation consisting Cabinet Ministers arrived in India in 1946 A.D. and the members held discussions with Congress and Muslim League leaders regarding the future set-up of India. Three of its members also came to Srinagar and stayed as guests of Maharaja Hari Singh and held discussion with him. During their Stay they were presented with memorandum, “questioned the validity of the Treaty of Amritsar by virtue of which the Jammu and Kashmir State was transferred to the Dogras and claimed consideration for the right of the people of the State to self determination”.But response of the Cabinet Mission was poor to the demands of the people, rather they acknowledged the right of the Maharaja Hari Singh over the State and in their proposals gave choice to the princes to decide whether or not the State would join the Constituent Assembly.
