DEWAN MOTI RAM (1819-1820 A.D.)

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
Much against the hopes and expectations of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the new governor could contribute little to restore the confidence of the people and increase the revenue. Soon after his arrival, cholera broke out in an epidemic form and the people in large numbers migrated to other parts leaving their lands unattended. The production of food grains decreased and trade and commercial activities came down to a large extent. Dewan Devi Dass who was sent by Maharaja Ranjit Singh to have an on spot study of the situation has given a pathetic account of the condition that prevailed in the Valley. Moti Ram was recalled and a new Governor namely Hari Singh Nalwa was appointed in his place.
