LATER MUGHALS
Aurangzeb was always heard praying death for himself on Friday which was granted by Almighty Allah and he died on Friday the 20th Feb., 1707 A.D to be succeeded by the eldest son Muzzam after abloody war of succession with his brothers Azam and Khan Baksh. But his rule of five years (1707-1712 A.D) was full of turmoil and chaos as turbulent forces were organizing themselves to put down the Mughal rule in Hindustan. The king would find little time to devote towards welfare activities as his mind would remain pre-occupied in devising plans to crush the rebellious forces. The governors of the province enjoyed free hand in management of provincial affairs and less accountability at the hands of emperor made them free enough in squeezing money from traders and cultivators. Almost same kind of conditions prevailed in Hindustan during the reign of his successors namely Jahandar Shah, Fruk Siyar and Mohammad Shah till finally the province of Kashmir was annexed with Afganistan by Ahmad Shah Abdali.During this period of 47 years (1707-1754 A.D.) fifty seven Governers and Deputy Governers ruled Kashmir and prominent among them were Asif Khan,Inayat-ullah Khan and Abus-Samad Khan.Disturbed political conditions encouraged Gujjars,Bombas and Khokhas living in out-skirts of the valley to wage raids and loot away the wealth. The period also witnessed worst kind of earthquake, devastating floods and famines particularly those of the years of 1724,1735 and 1746 A.D. which added to the miseries of the people. Trade and commerce received a great set back when the movement of merchandize was obstructed due to disturbances in Punjab and its neighbouring states.
Politcal instability and deep economic crises led Kashmir nobles like Mir Muqim Kanth and Khawaja Zahir-ud-Din Diddamari to sent their envoys to Ahmad Shah Abdali requesting fro conquest of Kashmir. Abdali leaped at the offer and dispatched a strong contigent under the command of Abdullah Khan Ishaq-Aqasi. The two forces fought fro 15 days and finally the Afgan forces won the battle and entered the Nagar Nagar fort in great triumph. This put to an end of the Mughal rule in Kashmir and a new dynastic rule, popularly known as Afghan rule started in the history of Kashmir.
