Megalithic Period

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
Neolithic phase is followed by a culture associated with erection of (Menhirs) known as Megaliths-tall slabs of stone set firmly in the earth. It is believed that towards the close of Neolithic Age, Menhirs were erected in memory of the dead but archeologists have not yet discovered the real significance of these massive stones. Both the archaelogical sites of Gufkral and Burzahom are conspicuous  for Menhirs.

In retrospect, it may be stated that theNeolithic Culture of Kashmir Valley has its own distinctive traits not shared by its counterparts from else-where in sub-continent.Its wide range of bone tools, dwelling pits, perforated knife or blade and burial of pet animals with masters, make it as something unique. On  the basis of a comperative study, it is claimed that Neolithic culture of Kashmir with its hunting based economy has close affinity with the similar cultures of North-west China and Central Asia. However, the discovery of copper pin and a few camilian beads from Gufkral and certain artifacts from Burzahom establish that trade relations existed between Kashmir and Harapan settlers.
