DENCITY OF POPULATION

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
Density of population per square kilometer of comparable area was 59 persons in 1981 and touched 76 persons in the year 1991 for the Jammu and Kashmir State. However, the density of population in the Kashmir region in 1981 was about 197 persons per square kilometer of comparable area.

The data relating to the density of population to six districts of the region is represented in the table below:

Table exhibiting district wise density of population in Kashmir

region for 1981 and 1991.

S.No     Name Of the District    Density of population             Estimated  density of Population

per Square Kms                          per sqr kms

                                                       1981                                        1991

1              Anantnag                         165                                      207

2              Pulwama                          289                                     369

3              Srinagar                           318                                      401

4              Budgam                           268                                      263

5              Baramulla                        146                                      146

6              Kupwara                          138                                      138

Table above makes it clear that district Srinagar is conspicuous for having returned to higher density of population followed by Pulwama and Budgam districts, which is attributed to better fertility and productivity, better infrastructural facilities, medical care and better avenues of livelihood, but district Kupwara stands last at the density table. It is because of the unfavourable and peculiar situation of the district, coupled with lack of irrigation facilities, inadequate development of infrastructural facilities in general and hilly character in particular.
