DECENNIAL GROWTH

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The decennial growth of population of the region exhibits tremendous fluctuations upto 1891. The persistent low growth rate was the result of cumulative effect of several factors, which includes, economic backwardness, natural calamities, inadequate medical id and facilities, besides the cultural background of the inhabitants of the valley.

Comparatively speaking, the decimal growth of population in the Kashmir region has shown declining trend in the succeeding decades of 1921,1931 and 1941 to 1901, with an exception of 1911. The main authentic factor responsible for the decrease in  decennial growth of population was due to the successive out break of epidemics such as, cholera, influenza, small pox etc. during these three decades which took heavy toll of the life in this region. The socio-economic and others factors which retarted the decennial growth rate of population are the out-break of great world war and failures of  crops in 1920, which also took heavy toll of Indian army wherein  many young boy of the region were recruited besides the unprecedented rise in the price index which had touched to the tune of 200 percent when compared with the pre war period price line.Similarly, the 1931-41 period too has witnessed decrease in the growth rate of population in the Kashmir division which is attributed with the world war second. But the population growth from 1941 appears to be steady in the Kashmir division which is mainly associated with the check and control to the epidemics and development of various socio-economic activities in the valley.

The percentage decadal variations  growth of population in the state according to census 1981 was 29.69 percent whereas, the percentage of decadal variations of population in Kashmir region 28.71 percent. Table below exhibits the decadal variation of Kashmir and percentage decadal variation of population of Jammu and Kashmir State as follows:

Demographic decadal variation and percentage of decadal variation of Kashmir region and State from 1901 to 1991.

(BASIC YEAR1901)

Year  Total Population       Decadal        % Decadal            %Decadal

1991         40,10,202 (P)     8,75,298              27.92                 28.92

The population data represented in the above makes it clear that the percentage decadal variation of population in Kashmir region in comparison to the State is higher with an exception in 1941. Besides insignificant variation in 1971, 1981 and 1991. The decrease in percentage decadal variation in 1941 is reflected with the failure of crops, price rise and world war second. The insignificant fluctuation in decadal variation percentage of population in 1971,1981 and 1991 in comparison to the decadal variation of the state to the extent of 1.42, 0.98 and 1.0 percents respectively is due to population control.
