DISTRICT BARAMULLA
The present Baramulla has long history and was initially pronounced as ‘Varahmul’. Before the drawn of independence it was a prosperous trade centre and was known as gate-way of Kashmir. It has a privilege of being first area to generate electricity from Mohara and ranks first in the generation of Hydro-Electricity in the State. It is also famous in for religious and historical places, and production of apple.
The district comprises of 660 villages, seven town, fourteen community development blocks, and 162 Panchayats. At present district has administratively been divided into eight tehsils. According to census of 1981, the population of the district was 6,70,142 persons, comprising of 3,58,293 persons male and 3,11,849 persons female, with the density of population per square kilometer to 146 persons. The population projected for 1991 made available by the Standing Committee of Experts, was 8.98 lakh persons.
