District Budgam is situated at 5,281 feets above the sea level and bounded in the north-west by district Baramulla, in the north-east by  district Srinagar, and in the south-east by district Pulwama of Kashmir region, and in the south-west by district Poonch of Jammu province of the State. The geographical area of the district is 1,371 square kilometers. The district has five towns, eight community development blocks, five notified area committees, 108 Panchayats and 496 villages.

The district was known as Deedmarbag, as reported in the books of the earlier times. It is famous for religious and historical places, besides places of interest and dense forests. It has administratively been divided into three tehsils of Budgam, Chadoora and Beerwah. According to population census of 1981 the total population of the district was 3,67,262 persons, out of which 1,95,395 persons were male and 1,71,867 persons were female and the density of population per square kilometer was 318 persons. The population projected for 1991 was 4.97 lakh persons. The tehsil and sex-wise break-up of population for 1981 is reproduced in table.
