DISTRICT SRINAGAR

The district Srinagar is situated 1730 metres above the sea level and lies between 330-14’ and 300-25’ North latitude, and 740-38’ East longitude. It is bounded in the north by district Kargil, in the south by district Pulwama, in the north east by district Anantnag, in the west by district Baramula,and in the south-west by district Budgam.

It possesses almost central position of the Kashmir region. It is the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir State and has a great antiquity. It has chequered history, which dates back to 250 B.C. In the past , Srinagar was known by Hemavar, Praverpora, and Praversenpur. It has remained the seat of power, with different kings shifting their capital from one place to the other, of the present district Srinagar.

This district Srinagar abounds in religious and historical places, besides lakes, springs and health resorts. The geographical area of the district Srinagar is 2,228 square kilometers, with three urban areas, four community development blocks, 175 villages, besides three tehsils and one Municipality. The population of the district as per the census report was 7,08,328 persons comprising 3,78,189 persons  male and 3,30,139 persons female for the year ending 1981. The density of the population for 1981 was 318 persons per square kilometer. The population for 1991 has been estimated at 8,92,506 persons. The tehsil and sex-wise break-up of population for 1981 is represented in the table:
