DISTRICT PULWAMA

In early times, Pulwama town was known as Panwangam, comprising of four parts viz, Malikpora, Dangerpora, Chatpora and Dulipora. The district is situated at an average height of 1,638 metres above the sea level, with the geographical area of 1,398 square kolimeters. It is surrounded in the north by district Srinagar, in the west by district Poonch of Jammu province and district Budgam, and in the east by district Anantnag of Kashmir region of the State. The principal crops of the district are rice, oil seed and fruits.

The district is famous for innumberable streams, waterfalls, springs, valleys and pastures, besides natural scenic spots.

The district at present (1997-98) has six community development blocks, 554 villages and four tehsils. The total population of the district was 4,04,078 persons, consisting of 2,13,093 persons male and 1,90,985 persons female in 1981. the population figure projected for 1991 was 5.16 lakh persons. The density of population of Pulwama district for 1981 was 289 persons per square kilometer.
