DISTRICT ANANTNAG

The district was named after the spring Anantnag, situated in the south of the present Anantnag town which stand authenticated by the Neelmat Purana. The District lies between 330 – 30’  to 340 -15’ North latitude and 740 -30’ to 750  -35’East longitude. It is spread over an area of 3,894 square kms. It is bounded by two districts of Kashmir divisions, and one districts of Ladakh Division and three districts of Jammu divisions. The district Srinagar  is in the north, district Pulwama in the North West, district  Kargil in the north east, district Doda in the east, district Udhampur in the South east and district Rajouri in the South west. It comprises of five tehsils, eight towns, ten community development blocks,140 Panchayats and 645 villages. The district is famous for springs, health resorts, religious and historical places, it is also known as granary of  Kashmir region.

The population of district Anantnag was 6,56,351 persons, comprising 3,47,706 persons male and 3,08,645 persons female in 1981 when regular Census operations were conducted in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. The estimated population for 1991 stands 8,26,291 lakhs persons, comparing of 4,37,768 persons male and 3,88,523 female. The tehsil and sex-wise break up of population for 1981 is represented in table as follows:

It is clear that the tehsil Anantnag and Kulgam are thickly populated in comparison to other three  tehsils of district Anantnag of Kashmir region. Which is attributed to comparatively better situation of the tehsils and developed  infrastructure of the area, coupled with fertile land and better productivity. The density of population per square kilometer of the district was 165 persons for 1981 and has increased provisionally to 207 persons for the year ending 1991.
