WANVUN

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

The wedding songs (Wanvun) are sung by Muslims and Hindus in villages and towns, but there are differences between the two in diction etc. The Muslim songs are weighted with Persian words, whereas, those of the Hindus have some Sanskrit vocabulary and the tunes recall vedic chants, which is specially true of Yagnopavit (sacred thread ceremony) and Hindu wedding songs. Usually, it is sung by the ladies at the marriage ceremony when the bridegroom leaves for his in-laws, and when the bride accompanies the bridegroom to his home. Some of its examples are:--“ Drai Rustumus moj wanavunai  Achha poshan mala karane ” The mother of the great Rustam (bridegroom) went out singing and making garland of flowers(for her son).                   “ Shah-i-Hamdanen koreeyai Maharaz wotai yooriyai “ Your are the daughter of the great saint Shah Hamadan (Hazrat Mir Syed Ali Hamadani) and the bridegroom has come in person to have your hand.
