PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENT

With the dawn of the twentieth century we come across with the nation movement for freedom from the British rule as well as with a challenge to the European Imperialism. In India, the Freedom Movement was led by Indian National Congress under the leadership of Mahatma Ghandi and in Russia Lenin led a Revolutionary movement against Tsarist Russia and in China by Mau Tse Tung. These movements dawned a new era in the field of literature all over the world and Kashmir was no exception to it. Kashmir produced two eminent persons of great talent in the persons of  Mahjoor and Azad. Mahjoor was imbued with a nationalist urge, Azad was revolutionary to the core of his heart. Both the poets were inspired by the great poet-Philospher, Dr.Sir Mohammad Iqbal their contemporary of Kasmir origin.Mahjoor sang the songs of love of freedom, of Hindu –Muslim unity. He had close relations with Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah who led freedom moment in Kashmir ,on the contrary, Azad sang the songs of freedom of man-his freedom from all forms of political subjugation and economic exploitation. Both hailed from villages and from economically poor sections of the society.Mahjoor was born in  Mitrigam village of district Pulwama in 1888 A.D and passed away in 1952 A.D. Azad was born in Rangir village of Budgam district in the year 1903 A.D. and passed away in  1948 A.D. Abdul Ahad Azad was a school teacher and a scholar. He  is the first Kashmiri to write a historical cum critical thesis on the development of Kashmiri poetry in 2 volumes. It is he who inspired the youth of his time to write on progressive lines. Mirza Ghulam Hassan Beg Arif was born in 1910 A.D. at Anantnag. Though religious by temperament and a scientist by training, he has done a great service to the promotion of Kashmiri language. He has written on progressive thesis and is the author of many books on poetry. His quatrains are of an excellent character. He established a forum for Kashmir language known as (Bazmi Adab) in 1945 A.D.

       Among the writers poets of the late 20th century,the names of following may be mentioned as having made significant contribution of Kashmiri literature: Dena Nath Mast, Mohammad Amin Kamil. Professor Rehman Rahi, Arjan Dev Majboor, Abdul Haq Burq,Naji Munawar, Shafi Shauq, Akhtar Mohi-ud-Din, Ali Mohammad Lone, Professor Margoob Banhali. Professor Mohi-ud-Din  Habib, Ghulam Nabi Gauhar, Professor Ghulam Mohammad Shad,Professor Hari Hishen Kaul,Gulam nabi Firaq, Autar Kishen Ranbar, Professor Sattar Ahmad Shahid, Sahid Badgami and Pushkar Bhan.
