KASHMIRI LANGUAGE DURING 19TH CENTURY

The nineteenth centuary may be  regarded as the classical period of Kashmiri language. This  period gave birth to some of the most important poets who have left their mark in Kashmiri poetry. These poets are still very popular and the standard bearers of Kashmiri Ghazal (lyric). The most outstanding among these are:-

SOCHAH KRAL: He was born in the Yendar village of Pulwama district died in 1855 A.D.

MEHMOOD GAMI (1765-1855 A.D): He was born in Mehmood Abad in the district Anantnag in 1765 A.D. He is considered as the most outstanding poet of Kashmiri language and the author of many books in poetry covering Ghazals, Masnavies, Naats etc. of which Masnavi Sherin Khusran,Lael Majnun, Haroon Rashid, Yousuf Zulaikha, are most important. Mehmood Gani became very famous during his life time and he continues to be among the most popular ports of Kashmir even today in Kashmir.

RASUL MIR: Is the most popular lyrical poets of Kashmir whose songs are sung to this day. He was born during the early years of 19th century at Dooru (Shah Abad) in Anantnag district. He spent his early years in the company of Mehmood Gami. The main theme of his poems is love for which he introduced a new romantic styles.

MAQBOOL SHAH KRALAWARI:

He was born in 1802 and died in1877 A.D. His outstanding contribution to Kashmiri literature are his famous masnavis such as ‘Gulrez’ and Yousuf Zulaikha.

Nineteenth centuary produced a large number of talented poets who enriched the Kashmiri poetry in diverse forms and made it popular among the general public. Outstanding among these poets are Parmanand (1794-1879 A.D) of Rainawari, Srinagar, Krishan Joo Razdan (1850-1926 A.D) of Wanpoh, Anantnag, Rehman Dar of Chattabal, Srinagar (a sufi poet) Neama Saeb (Srinagar)- also a sufi poet, Shamas Faqir (1843-1901 A.D) a great sufi poet of Srinagar, Ahmad Batwari (1845-1904 A.D) of Srinagar, Wahab Khar (1842-1912 A.D) of Khrew Pulwama district, Rahim Saeb of Sopore (d.1860 A.D) followed by Maulana Anwar Sahib Shopiani(1853-1940 A.D) Fazil Kashmiri of Srinagar (b.1916 A.D) and Mir Ghulam Rasool Nazki of Bandipora (1910-1996 A.D) were among the leading poets of 20th century.
