Language

KASHMIRI

Kashmiri language is the mother tongue of the Kashmiris and the contiguous areas stretching to Poonch,Rajouri and Baderhmah. The area of the Kashmiri language and its dialects covers approximately 15,000 square kilometers of Kashmir province.

PERSIAN

The valley of Kashmir sealed on all sides by a chain of mountains, gave rise to a feeling of aloofness among Kashmiris in the past and they were not in a mood to allow any foreigner except a few Jews to enter the valley. But with the passage of time,its treasures of language and culture were known to outside world, which tempted traders as well as conquerors to bring Kashmir under their influence. Traders and soldiers who came from time to time,brought with them their customs,traditions and manners. One cannot shut eyes to the glaring fact of history that the day-to-day life in the valley is full of foreign influence. History also bears witness that the ancient Kingdom of Gandhara, extending from Anantnag to Peshawar (Pakistan), had its cultural relations with Iran. URDU

The word Urdu is of “Turkesh” origing, it means a lashkar or army. The word itself signifies the origin of its development. In India Urdu developed as a result of contact between the armed forces of Central Asian dynastics who ruled from the time of Mohammad Ghori towards the end of 12 century A.D. As is well-known Hazrat Amiri-Khusrou,(1253-1326 A.D) was the first to compose poetic Rekhtas or stanzas in what came to be known, as the initial form ofurdu language. Therefore, the origin of the language is traced to the times of Hazrat Amiri Khusrou. HINDI

Kashmir is a non-Hindi region. The number of people who can speak Hindi clearly is 2.55 lakh persons for the year ending1981. A sizable section of the educated urban and semi-urban population in the valley is well acquainted with the standard literary form of the language. Kashmir Pandits who had left Kashmir during reign of Sultan Sikander and had settled in Punjab and Utter Pradesh came back to Kashmir during the reign of Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin. During their stay of about 30 to 35 years in Hindi speaking areas, they were very much influenced by Brij Basha and other dialects of Hindi and Punjabi. ...

PUNJABI

The expression ‘Punjabi’ stands for the language of the Punjab—a land of five rivers, but the linguistic survey has marked its boundries beyond its home State. Sir G.Grierson remarks that the pujabi is spoken in the southern half of the State. There were relations between Punjabi and Dogri. The Punjabi language has two dialects—the ordinary idiom of language and Dogra or Dogra, but the latter is spoken over the sub-mountaneous areas of Jammu region of the State with variations in various forms. ...

GUJRI

Gujri is the spoken language of the Gujars of Kashmir who constitute a sizeable proportion of the population of the region. This language belongs to the Indo-aryan group of languages as against the Dadric origin in Kashmiri language. This language has a very old history, that is it dates back to the immigration of the Gujar tribes from central Asia into the Indo-Pakistan sub-continent about 8th century A.D....
